Hurricane Irene Impacts NH Travel

NH Travel Hurricane Irene 150x150 photo (family vacations)While the East Coast begins to recover from the flooding, fallen trees, and power outages caused by Hurricane Irene, businesses in the travel and hospitality industry are counting their losses, which are unlikely to be recouped in the coming weeks as travelers cut their summer vacations short across New Hampshire and all of New England.

In addition to canceled flights and closed airports, many cities stopped all public transit services over the weekend in preparation for the storm, leaving few options for getting around and forcing travelers to change vacation plans. Amtrak and Greyhound also suspended service on several routes throughout the northeast, and some states issued travel bans on roads. Read More »

Leef-Peeping Season Begins Soon in Northern New Hampshire

Photo by Someone35 Licnse Creative Commons Attribution Share Alike 3.0 Unported 300x225 photo (fun things to do in new hampshire)As autumn approaches, this NH grand resort hotel is looking forward to yet another awesome season of Nature’s fall kaleidoscope. We are  just mere days away from some of northern New Hampshire’s very first “leaf-peeping” events! September 3 will mark the first 2011 voyages of the “Hobo Railroad”, an hour-long train ride that begins in Lincoln.

The Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad jumps into gear the same day, running a two-hour route from Meredith and Weirs Beach. Other “trains n’ trees” adventures, in some cases longer, are detailed at FoliageTrains.com.   Some of these trips feature private Pullman cars, dinners carved at your table and in some cases, environments that look more like luxury hotels than train cars. NH Historical Photos Show “Memorable Moose Moment” at Luxury New Hampshire Hotel

balsams history 0122 photo (historical new england)Being near Moose Alley comes with incidents that can be as quirky as the giant beasts themselves.  In May 1998, the Union Leader reported one of them ended up in this New Hampshire vacation spot’s pool!  These photos, apparently taken by someone from the resort, appeared in the paper on May 6th of that year.

Nature Conservancy’s New Man in Concord to Face Challenges

812 0003 150x150 photo (nh nature conservation)The Balsams’ partners at The Nature Conservancy are welcoming a new face onto their team…a face familiar in the halls of New Hampshire government.   The Conservancy’s website at Nature.org reports that as of August 15th, Jim O’Brien of Hopkinton will be at the Conservancy’s Concord office as Director of Government Relations.

O’Brien’s background includes serving as director of Conservation New Hampshire and also of the Granite State Conservation Voters Alliance.  O’Brien also managed Gordon Humphrey’s 2002 campaign for governor and has also served as development director for Concord’s branch of the Red Cross.  He’s used his legislative and PR skills to appeal for state funding of conservation programs such as LCHIP, the Land and Community Heritage Investment Program.

O’Brien replaces the organization’s former director of government relations, Joel Harrington, who departed TNC for Vermont Law School.

The New Hampshire Sustainable Energy Association (NHSEA) lists some of O’Brien’s other achievements as of around 2008:

“Jim is a graduate of the University of New Hampshire, where he studied political science, history and economics. Jim is a selectman in Hopkinton and was past chair of Leadership Greater Concord. In 2007, Jim was named one of New Hampshire’s forty leaders under 40 by the Manchester Union Leader.”

Writing in the Union Leader during a funding fight over LCHIP around 2008…he used his knowledge of New Hampshire’s history and political landscape to make his case for underwriting the program.

“To put into context where funding for LCHIP resides,” he writes, “if the Senate budget passed the state would dedicate just one-half of one tenth of 1 percent (0.05 percent) of its entire $10.2 billion budget to protecting our state’s most important natural and historic resources. Is this the priority funding that senators campaigned on last fall?”

O’Brien takes charge of TNC’s government relations as economic stresses and political changes make government funding more difficult to come by than it was two years ago. But his new boss Daryl Burtnett expresses confidence in him:

“Jim possesses extensive knowledge of legislative and rulemaking process, and has earned respect from all points on the political spectrum,” he writes. “We are thrilled to have Jim on board at this critical time for environmental issues in our state.”

NH Resort Maintains Fuel Diversity Amidst “Oil Turmoil”

You may remember that 2009 video where we took you behind the scenes at The Balsams.  The video above is an update.  Most guests aren’t aware just how stunning the energy infrastructure is at this New Hampshire luxury resort.

A hydro plant, clean and green. A biomass facility. And an oil burner when needed. Then as now, the hotel could power the whole valley. But in the two years since we filmed these sequences, energy independence has become an even more pressing concern.

The Energy Information Administration is reporting home heating oil prices rose 24 percent in U.S. dollars between February 2010 and February 2011.  In the same article, this from the Northeast Biomass Thermal Working Group: Their representative Charlie Niebling says:

“Biomass, such as pellet fuel and wood chips, provides an alternative to exporting 75 cents out of every Northeastern dollar spent, which is what occurs with heating oil from foreign sources. Heating homes and businesses with biomass not only saves money on heating bills, but helps communities to retain more of their wealth due to local sourcing, delivery and use of sustainably produced fuel.”

Technically the price of car gas has gone down…but only when you measure it in terms of hard money like gold and silver. In U.S. dollars Americans are now spending about 40 percent more per gallon than they did when these images were taken in October ‘09. Inflation is the primary cause for now, but the fighting in Libya and other stability issues in the Middle East are always poised to seriously exacerbate the problem.

When that happens, The Balsams should at least be in a position to spotlight *some* examples of alternative energy. No need for overseas help when it comes to trees or water!
