Golf Greats Gathered at NH Resort

balsams ben hogan Joe Kirkwood Horlon Smith 255x300 photo (historical new england)The ace new-media operatives over at BobDonPaul.com have been carefully collecting more *old* media from this NH vacation spot lately.  Much of it is in the form of winsome 20th-century images.  Here’s an undated shot whose handwritten caption makes up for the lack of year information by detailing the famous people within the picture.  The caption appears to have been written between 1951 and 1999, and it reads:

“Before the development of today’s professional golf tour, in the first half of this century, the great golfers of their day made most of their income by staging exhibitions around the country.  Here are three Hall of Fame golfers photographed at The Balsams Golf Club on the Donald Ross designed championship course: With club in hand, the most famous trick-shot artist ever, Joe Kirkwood, with arms crossed and standing immediately to the right, Ben Hogan, perhaps the best golfer in history, and in the white outfit with arms akimbo, Balsams head professional and world champion golfer, Horton Smith.”

Golf & Ski Warehouse Takes Residence at NH Vacation Spot

balsams personnel 7 2010 047 150x150 photo (golfing)If you’re a golfer or tennis player, your next visit to this New Hampshire hotel may make you feel even more at home than usual.  Golf & Ski Warehouse has set up a branch store right here on resort grounds.  Not only that, golf/tennis chief Rick Toland says that unlike most shops at other hotels, this one will charge you very reasonable prices.  The Balsams has adopted Golf & Ski’s pricing structure, which means the prices here will generally be the same as those at Warehouses in shopping centers or malls, minus the sales tax (New Hampshire doesn’t have one).

Adventures Abound in Summer “Camp” Program at New Hampshire Hotel

Biking at The Balsams 150x150 photo (dog sledding)For families with children visiting this New England Resort during the summer, Camp Wind Whistle offers guests of all ages an opportunity to enjoy a truly relaxing and fun vacation.  The complimentary day program provides children with a wide variety of activities while parents spend a worry-free morning or afternoon unwinding and enjoying the many amenities of this popular NH vacation spot.

The environment at The Balsams Grand Resort Hotel is naturally self-contained, and therefore, quite safe.  The extensive grounds here also encourage children and adults alike to explore and try new things while experiencing a sense of freedom.  Parents can relax and know their children are having a great time while they take a little time to themselves.  The camp counselors occupy the kids with activities that entertain as well as educate, such as tennis, golf, poolside games, swimming, nature walks, fishing, and visits to Santa Maria Farm, where the children can meet the animals and pick blueberries.  On rainy days, the staff hosts indoor games, scavenger hunts, game-room tournaments, movies, arts and crafts, and more!  The hotel even has its own “Miss Manners” who teaches children social skills and etiquette for the dining room and beyond!

Camp Wind Whistle begins this year on Monday, June 28th and ends on Labor Day Weekend September 5th.  The program is for children ages 5 and older, and is divided into three age brackets:  5 – 7, 8 – 9, and 10+.  Children younger than 5 are welcome to attend the activities in the program if accompanied by an adult—a parent, a babysitter provided by The Balsams, or another qualified adult.

The day starts at 9:00, and parents can enroll their children in the morning or afternoon sessions, or the all day program until 4:00.  Lunch is flexible as well.  Children can stay with the counselors for lunch in the dining room, or join their parents between 12:30-1:30.  The dinner and evening program from 6:30-9:00 is also available upon request.

For older children, there are some fun new options!  The resort will be organizing an optional riding camp with a nearby horse farm, Fiore Stables.  Kids ages 9 and up can enroll in the 5-day program for an additional cost that includes lunch.  Families and teens can also participate in ropes course trips with high and low elements, which are now available Monday through Friday.  And John Kennedy, Director of Recreation at The Balsams, is most excited about a new “rolling dog sled” program through Muddy Paw Sled Dog Kennel.  Twice a week, the cross-country bike trails will be transformed into dog sled adventures!

With so much to do and see in the North Country, and so much quiet wilderness to refresh your spirits, nothing beats a family vacation at this New Hampshire resort!

Happy Bride Shares Experience of Wedding at NH Resort

Heidi Mark Wedding 150x150 photo (destination weddings)

Heidi and Mark Placy

When Heidi and Mark Placy first became engaged, they weren’t sure when they were going to “tie the knot,” but were “thrilled to be entering a new stage… and wanted to enjoy every moment of it.”  About a month into their engagement, Mark’s father became terminally ill, and the couple’s priorities changed.  “He wanted to see his son get married and we wanted him to share in our special day,” said Heidi.  “The question became, ‘How can we plan a wedding within weeks and still work full time?’  The answer was simple, we made a call to Mrs. Ahrens and explained our situation.”

Thus states a letter Heidi Placy wrote in response to Karen Ahrens, The Balsams’ wedding specialist, earning a certificate in wedding consulting.  The Balsams Blogging Team wanted to know more, and Mrs. Placy, who got married at this New England Resort on October 15, 2005, was kind enough to speak with us about her wedding experience… Read More »
