The ace new-media operatives over at BobDonPaul.com have been carefully collecting more *old* media from this NH vacation spot lately. Much of it is in the form of winsome 20th-century images. Here’s an undated shot whose handwritten caption makes up for the lack of year information by detailing the famous people within the picture. The caption appears to have been written between 1951 and 1999, and it reads:
“Before the development of today’s professional golf tour, in the first half of this century, the great golfers of their day made most of their income by staging exhibitions around the country. Here are three Hall of Fame golfers photographed at The Balsams Golf Club on the Donald Ross designed championship course: With club in hand, the most famous trick-shot artist ever, Joe Kirkwood, with arms crossed and standing immediately to the right, Ben Hogan, perhaps the best golfer in history, and in the white outfit with arms akimbo, Balsams head professional and world champion golfer, Horton Smith.”

Being near Moose Alley comes with incidents that can be as quirky as the giant beasts themselves. In May 1998, the Union Leader reported one of them ended up in this New Hampshire vacation spot’s pool! These photos, apparently taken by someone from the resort, appeared in the paper on May 6th of that year.

The golf course at this New England resort was recently listed by Golfweek Magazine as one of Best Courses You Can Play, State-by-State, 2010. Golfweek named the best public-access courses in each state across the country, and The Panorama Golf Course at The Balsams Grand Resort Hotel ranked as one of the top three courses in New Hampshire. The BALSAMS' music director Rick Erwin with Steinway #1693
It was among the first to bear the Steinway name, older than any living human. Born five years after Steinway began piano production in America, bearing the serial number “1693,” it sits in the John Dix Social Room of a famous NH hotel: The Balsams.
“They said that if we can come get it, it’s ours,” beams music director Rick Erwin. “‘It’s quite an artistic masterpiece.”

History and tradition abound at this NH grand hotel. For example, you may know that New Hampshire is the first state to vote in the presidential primary. But did you also know that Dixville Notch is the first town to vote in each primary as well? Citizens gather in The Balsams’ Ballot Room at midnight on primary day to cast their votes.
Over the years, many presidential candidates have visited Dixville Notch. If they needed lodging, guess where they spent the night? Of course, The Balsams! Below is a short list of presidents and the more notable presidential candidates who’ve been guests at The Balsams.
