To the outsider, New Hampshire (NH) can be a bewildering mix of rustic and sophisticated.  These recommendations will aim you toward the sophisticated spots when it comes to northern NH gourmet food, along with one or two NH restaurants your kids will love.

The William Tell Restaurant: “Best Restaurant in Snow Country,”  according to the Boston Globe.  Romantic dining right off Highway 93 if you are traveling north from Manchester Airport.

Diamond’s Edge North: Fine dining, family-friendly, casual.   Won Ski Magazine’s “Editors Choice Award” for “Best Local Dining.”  They are also open every night.

The Balsams Dining Room: Conde Nast Traveler gives The Balsams a “perfect” rating for the dining experience it provides.  The dining room itself is so fancy, men are required to wear dinner jackets in the evening.   But there are also three more casual restaurant venues at this picturesque NH hotel.

The Canoe Club: Leather couches, single malt scotches and a water wall adorn this sophisticated Upper Valley social spot.  Open 363 days a year with live entertainment nearly every night, it gets its name from a 1918 sailing vessel, currently hanging from the wall!

Flatbread: Organic produce, free range chicken and pizza cooked in primitive wood-fired ovens.  Unlike the other NH restaurants we’ve listed this is technically a chain…but only seven branches exist, most in New England.  Click on the North Conway restaurant.

These NH restaurants are within reasonable driving distance of The Balsams if you’re staying at the resort.  Each provides its own civilized counterpoint to New England’s “Wild East,” where gourmet food mixes with moose visits!

Did we miss one?  Have a northern NH restaurant you’d like to recommend?  Post your comment or recommendations below…
