Golf Greats Gathered at NH Resort

balsams ben hogan Joe Kirkwood Horlon Smith 255x300 photo (historical new england)The ace new-media operatives over at BobDonPaul.com have been carefully collecting more *old* media from this NH vacation spot lately.  Much of it is in the form of winsome 20th-century images.  Here’s an undated shot whose handwritten caption makes up for the lack of year information by detailing the famous people within the picture.  The caption appears to have been written between 1951 and 1999, and it reads:

“Before the development of today’s professional golf tour, in the first half of this century, the great golfers of their day made most of their income by staging exhibitions around the country.  Here are three Hall of Fame golfers photographed at The Balsams Golf Club on the Donald Ross designed championship course: With club in hand, the most famous trick-shot artist ever, Joe Kirkwood, with arms crossed and standing immediately to the right, Ben Hogan, perhaps the best golfer in history, and in the white outfit with arms akimbo, Balsams head professional and world champion golfer, Horton Smith.”

The War of 1812 saw far more deaths from disease than from combat

The Balsams' red clay courts are admired by both legendary pros and young amateurs.

When Rick Toland recently took charge of tennis programs at this northern NH vacation spot, he wasn’t exactly a stranger.  He has intermittently served here (pardon the punnery) since the 1970s.

It was in those early days of Toland’s resort service that a highlight occurred which bears recalling… Read More »

But starting on June 14th he’ll be putting twelve new culinary apprentices through an intense period in their lives, at one of New Hampshire’s most respected dining facilities.  These carefully-selected freshmen are mostly accomplished cooks already, but generally just half make it through The Balsams’ roughly four-year culinary training program.
