Runners starting out from the Panorama Clubhouse
It seems there are a lot of running races and events happening in New England at this time of year, but the Dixville Notch Half Marathon taking place at this favorite NH vacation spot looks like one of the most fun!
Now in its 34th year, the Annual Dixville Notch Half Marathon is set for Saturday, September 25th. The event draws over 100 participants and offers runners a choice of races: a USATF-certified half-marathon, a two-person relay 6-mile and 7.1-mile event, or a four-person relay with three 3-mile legs and one 4.1-mile leg. There is also a three-mile Fun Walk for non-runners. Read More »

The ace new-media operatives over at BobDonPaul.com have been carefully collecting more *old* media from this NH vacation spot lately. Much of it is in the form of winsome 20th-century images. Here’s an undated shot whose handwritten caption makes up for the lack of year information by detailing the famous people within the picture. The caption appears to have been written between 1951 and 1999, and it reads:
“Before the development of today’s professional golf tour, in the first half of this century, the great golfers of their day made most of their income by staging exhibitions around the country. Here are three Hall of Fame golfers photographed at The Balsams Golf Club on the Donald Ross designed championship course: With club in hand, the most famous trick-shot artist ever, Joe Kirkwood, with arms crossed and standing immediately to the right, Ben Hogan, perhaps the best golfer in history, and in the white outfit with arms akimbo, Balsams head professional and world champion golfer, Horton Smith.”

Being near Moose Alley comes with incidents that can be as quirky as the giant beasts themselves. In May 1998, the Union Leader reported one of them ended up in this New Hampshire vacation spot’s pool! These photos, apparently taken by someone from the resort, appeared in the paper on May 6th of that year.

If you’re one of many who fly into Manchester Airport to visit this NH vacation spot, you’ll likely drive right past one of the more spectacular hikes in America – the Franconia Ridge Loop. Located in the White Mountains National Forest, this potentially rewarding trail is more dangerous than it looks, but unlike some of New Hampshire’s more tree-shrouded ascents, it offers spectacular views that continue as the hike progresses.

If you’re a golfer or tennis player, your next visit to this New Hampshire hotel may make you feel even more at home than usual. Golf & Ski Warehouse has set up a branch store right here on resort grounds. Not only that, golf/tennis chief Rick Toland says that unlike most shops at other hotels, this one will charge you very reasonable prices. The Balsams has adopted Golf & Ski’s pricing structure, which means the prices here will generally be the same as those at Warehouses in shopping centers or malls, minus the sales tax (New Hampshire doesn’t have one).

The Balsams' red clay courts are admired by both legendary pros and young amateurs.
When Rick Toland recently took charge of tennis programs at this northern NH vacation spot, he wasn’t exactly a stranger. He has intermittently served here (pardon the punnery) since the 1970s.
It was in those early days of Toland’s resort service that a highlight occurred which bears recalling… Read More »
